He is one of the many Moroccan undergraduates who has relocated to a new city to follow his studies, but has been powerless to find a spot or even a dormitory bed in the congested university halls. “I have to look for new accommodation each semester,” he says. “Typically a dormitory is far from the university campus, and quite expensive, so I keep moving from one place to another hoping I might get emotional stability, particularly before the exams.”
Abdel Raheem is very fortunate compared to another 22 year old fellow student who is from a remote area thousands of miles from the university. “After failing to find a bed in the dormitory, I rented a flat close to my university, but my educational trip did not last long,” she says. “Burglars broke into my room and I had to go back to my family deprived of completing my education.” After the break-in, her father was anxious about letting her live alone or even with other female undergraduates.
Hanan, an English literature student, was put in hospital and failed the semester as her dormitory contract finished just before the final exam, and she could not find another place at a sensible price. The deputy manager of the dormitories and head of the Economic Authority Southern Morocco, said the tricky problem comes from the enormous number of incoming students at Ibn Zuhr University, which is roughly 96,000, compared to the 1,540 dormitory beds accessible to them.
Even as enrolment has gradually increased across the country, not enough adequate student housing has been constructed, renovated or extended, officials say. During a parliament hearing last year, the Moroccan government swore to increase the capacity of university dorms in the academic year of 2015/2016 by 50%, and to uphold and recondition the dorms in the big Moroccan.
Many students enrol into university but have had to live with their families very far away from campus, having to skip lectures and only traveling to the University for exams.
